This fantastic step stool design was created by John McGrath from Man In Shed. It’s a perfect project for beginners and can be completed in just one day!

Materials Needed:
- 3/4″ (18mm) Birch Plywood
- Wood Glue
- Danish Oil (for finishing)
Tools Required:
- Track Saw
- Router
- Hand Tools (optional)
- Clamps
- Sander
Step 1: Sketch Your Design
Start by sketching out your design. A simple drawing with dimensions will help guide your cuts. For this stool, the dimensions are:
- Height: 400 mm (16 inches)
- Width: 600 mm (24 inches)
- Top Step: 200 mm (8 inches)
- Bottom Step: 300 mm (12 inches)
Keep your design simple; remember, it’s just a step stool!

Step 2: Prepare the Plywood
Before you start cutting, check your plywood for square edges. Use a track saw to create a straight edge if necessary. This will serve as your reference edge for all subsequent cuts.

Step 3: Cut the Main Components
Cut out the side pieces for the frame and the steps. Make sure both sides are identical to ensure stability. After cutting, check to make sure all corners are at a perfect 90 degrees.

Step 4: Create Joinery Cuts
For added strength, you’ll want to cut dados into the frame where the steps will fit. This provides additional support and stability. Mark the locations for the dados and use a router to achieve the desired depth and width.

Step 5: Assemble the Frame
With all your pieces cut and dados routed, it’s time to assemble the frame. Fit the steps into the dados and add cross braces for extra support. Check the fit before applying glue.

Step 6: Add Finishing Touches
Before gluing everything together, consider adding some decorative touches. Round off sharp edges and add chamfers to the cross braces for a smoother appearance. Once you’re satisfied, apply wood glue to all joints and clamp them securely.

Step 7: Sand and Finish
After the glue has set, remove the clamps and sand the entire stool to a smooth finish. Apply a coat of Danish oil to enhance the wood grain and protect the surface.

Step 8: Final Inspection
Check the stability of your step stool. It should be able to support your weight (up to 200 pounds or 90 kilos) comfortably. It’s now ready for use!

This step stool is not only functional but also a great addition to any home. Whether it’s for your child to reach the kitchen counter or for adults needing a boost, it’s a reliable and sturdy piece.
