Build a Nightstand with Drawer & Shelf

This large DIY nightstand with a big drawer and an open shelf was created by Houseful of Handmade, and it’s perfect for any bedroom or living space.

This build can easily be completed over a weekend, making it a great option whether you’re a beginner or have some woodworking experience.

Materials Needed:

  • 1×2 boards
  • 1×6 boards
  • 1/4 in plywood for the drawer box
  • Wood glue
  • Edge banding
  • Knobs for the drawer
  • Figure 8 fasteners for the top

Tools Required:

  • Drill with pocket hole jig
  • Jigsaw
  • Clamps
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Prepare the Side Panels

Start by adding pocket holes to the side panels. I recommend using two pocket holes close to the center of each side to avoid interference with the side rails.

Step 2: Assemble the Side Panel and Rails

Attach the side panel between the two rails using 1 and 1/4 inch pocket hole screws. Repeat this for the second side panel.

Step 3: Notch Out the Bottom Shelf

To allow the bottom shelf to fit around the legs, use a jigsaw to notch out sections. Specific measurements for the notches can be found in the build plans.

Step 4: Attach the Shelf and Top

Attach the bottom shelf first to simplify assembly, then add the top piece so it is flush with the back and the top of the legs.

Step 5: Create the Nightstand Top

The nightstand top is made by gluing together three 1×6 boards. Use pocket holes to keep everything flush and secure while the glue dries.

Step 6: Build the Drawer Box

For the drawer box, utilize 1/4 in plywood and assemble it using pocket holes. I added a small groove to the center of the drawer front to create the appearance of two small drawers.

Step 7: Install the Drawer Slides

Attach drawer slides inside the nightstand to ensure the drawer fits perfectly. After aligning the drawer front, use screws to secure it in place.
