Build A Flip Top Tool Stand

Looking for a space-saving solution for your woodworking tools? This flip top tool stand was built and designed by Jared from The Evening Woodworker, and it’s an excellent addition to any small shop.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 3/4″ plywood (2 sheets)
  • 1/2″ plywood (1 sheet)
  • 1/2″ steel rod (for pivot)
  • Knobs (4)
  • Locking casters (4)
  • Wood screws
  • Pocket hole screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Drill
  • Table saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Miter saw
  • Framing square

Step 1: Cutting the Plywood

Start by cutting your two sheets of 3/4″ plywood into the required dimensions for the top and bottom of the stand. You will also need to cut additional pieces for the sides and back. Use a table saw for precise cuts.

Step 2: Assembling the Base

Assemble the base of the tool stand using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure the structure is sturdy, as it will support the weight of your tools. Use pocket hole screws for added strength in the joints.

Step 3: Creating the Flip Top Mechanism

Drill holes in the sides of the stand for the 1/2″ steel rod, which will serve as the pivot point for the flip top. Ensure that the holes are aligned perfectly to allow smooth rotation.

Step 4: Attaching the Top

Once the base is ready, attach the top piece using the steel rod as the pivot. Make sure it’s balanced and rotates freely. Test the mechanism by flipping the top over to ensure it locks securely in place.

Step 5: Adding the Locking Mechanism

To secure the top in place when in use, install blocks that slide up to lock the table top. This design eliminates the need for pins and latches, offering a more reliable solution.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Sand down all surfaces to remove any rough edges and apply a finish of your choice to protect the wood. Ensure that all components are securely fastened and that the stand is stable.

Step 7: Mounting Your Tools

Finally, mount your tools on the flip top stand. For this project, a Ridgid oscillating belt sander is mounted on top, with a Dewalt planer on the bottom. Make sure to connect any necessary power cords and dust collection systems.

Conclusion

With your flip top tool stand complete, you now have a functional workspace that maximizes your shop’s space. This project not only helps organize your tools but also enhances your efficiency while working. If you want to build this exact design, check out the plans linked below!
