This project was built and designed by Pete from DIY Pete. It’s a space-saving Murphy Bar that folds down into a table and folds back up into a cabinet—perfect for outdoor entertaining.

When closed, the Murphy Bar serves as a stylish wall-mounted cabinet. When opened, it becomes a practical serving station for drinks, snacks, and more.

Starting the Build

The project begins with cutting boards for the frame and back panel. A piece of plywood is used to strengthen the structure and fit flush inside the outer frame.

A French cleat is added to the top edge to make wall mounting secure and easy to remove later. This angled cleat will help the cabinet hang flat against the wall.

Assembling the Frame

The top and bottom boards are joined to the side boards using pocket holes and screws. Wood glue is added at each joint to improve strength and hold everything together.

With clamps holding the corners square, the plywood back is set into place and screwed down. Pocket holes in the plywood keep the screws hidden once installed.

The cleat is attached to the top edge of the frame before moving on. At this point, the cabinet begins to take shape and is ready for interior shelves.

Making the Wine Rack and Shelves

Next, three boards are cut for the wine glass rack. Holes are marked and drilled before using a jigsaw to create notches for the glasses to hang from.

After testing the fit, the wine rack is secured to the frame using pocket screws. Additional shelves can be added below or above depending on your storage needs.

These shelves are ideal for holding glasses, bottles, or other small bar tools. With the wine rack and shelving complete, the cabinet section is fully functional.

Constructing the Fold-Down Table

Boards are cut for the table portion, including the top and support frame underneath. This internal frame helps keep the tabletop stable during use.

The legs are constructed separately and attached using hinges so they can fold flat when not in use. Locking hinge supports are added to keep the legs secure at a 90-degree angle.

Care is taken to align everything properly so the table folds in and out without issues. A few adjustments may be needed to ensure smooth movement.

Preparing for the Finish

The entire piece is sanded to remove rough spots and prepare for finishing. A roundover bit on the router softens the edges for comfort and appearance.

To hold an acrylic panel on the tabletop, a shallow groove is routed around the top surface. The corners are squared up using a chisel to ensure a clean fit.

All surfaces are wiped down before paint is applied. This step removes dust and helps the paint adhere evenly.

Applying the Finish

Pete uses Krylon Outdoor Décor paint for its fast drying and durable finish. Multiple coats are applied to achieve a smooth, even color.

This paint helps resist fading and cracking, making it ideal for outdoor furniture. Once dry, the surface looks clean, bright, and ready for use.

Final Assembly and Mounting

After the paint has cured, the acrylic panel is placed into the top. Hinges are installed to attach the fold-down table to the cabinet base.

A latch is added to hold the table in its upright position when not in use. Hardware that was removed for painting is reinstalled at this stage.

The cabinet is hung on the wall using the cleat. Once mounted, the Murphy Bar folds down into a level table that sits flush with the wall when closed.

Adding Personal Touches

To finish off the project, accessories like a bottle opener or LED lighting can be added. These extras bring personality and function to the final setup.

The Murphy Bar becomes a centerpiece for backyard get-togethers or casual evenings at home. It’s both functional and easy to customize.
