Materials and Tools Needed
- Birch plywood (2 sheets of ¾”)
- 1×2 pre-primed pine boards for the face frame
- 1¼” pocket hole screws
- Wood screws (25 pieces)
- 165° concealed hinges (1 pair)
- 135° lazy Susan hinges (1 pair)
- Wood glue
- Edge banding (optional)
- Drill/driver
- Circular saw
- Jig saw
- Pocket hole jig
- Measuring tape
- Clamps
- Screwdriver
- Sandpaper
Step 1: Cut the Plywood
Start by cutting down the plywood into the necessary pieces. For this project, use birch plywood. The cut list can be found in the printable plans. Begin by ripping a strip off the bottom of the sheet to create the back corner piece of the cabinet, which will be set aside for later use.
Step 2: Create the Side and Back Panels
From the remaining plywood, cut two side panels and two back panels. The side panels will be attached to the adjacent base cabinets once installed. Don’t forget to mark and notch out a toe kick on the bottom front corners!
Step 3: Cut the Bottom Panel
Next, cut the bottom panel from a second sheet of plywood. Trim it to the appropriate size and mark where it will need to be cut for both the front and back corners. The front corner should be cut into a 12-inch square while the back corner will be cut diagonally.
Step 4: Assemble the Cabinet
Assemble the cabinet using pocket holes and screws. It’s important to note that this cabinet can be tricky to balance due to its large and awkward shape. It’s recommended to attach the back panels next before securing the bottom to them.
Step 5: Add Support Strips
Add top support strips and toe kick supports. Be mindful to cut the toe kick supports longer than the top supports. These supports will help with the overall stability of the cabinet.
Step 6: Cut the Back Panel
For the back panel, you need to bevel both edges at a 45° angle. Use a circular saw and straight edge to achieve this cut. Make sure to check the direction of the bevel before cutting!
Step 7: Install the Face Frame
Build the face frame using 1×2 pre-primed pine boards. Use a micro pocket hole jig to drill holes for attaching the face frame to the cabinet. Attach the face frame using pocket hole screws or wood glue and nails.
Step 8: Decide on Interior Options
Corner cabinets can have various interior configurations, such as drawers or lazy Susans. In this case, if you prefer a simple shelf, drill shelf pin holes into the side panels and back angled piece to accommodate shelf pins.
Step 9: Cut and Install the Shelf
Measure and cut a piece of plywood for the shelf. Be sure to edge band the front edges for a polished look before inserting it with shelf pins.
Step 10: Build the Doors
For the bi-fold doors, assemble them according to your preferred method. Once completed, prime and paint the doors, as well as the face frame of the cabinet.
Step 11: Install the Hinges
Install the concealed hinges for the doors. You’ll need two pairs of hinges: one for connecting the doors together and another for attaching the doors to the cabinet. Ensure the doors can open wider than normal for easy access.
Step 12: Final Touches
After everything is assembled, make any necessary adjustments to ensure the doors align properly. Use bumpers to keep the doors from rubbing against the cabinet frame.
And there you have it! A beautiful corner base cabinet with bi-fold doors, ready to enhance your space.
