This design was built and created by The Evening Woodworker, and it’s perfect for any home needing extra sleeping space. This guide will walk you through the steps to create a sturdy, functional bunk bed that can support adults as well as kids.
Materials Needed:
- 1×4 lumber
- 2×4 lumber
- 2×6 lumber
- 2×2 lumber
- Wood glue
- Wood screws
- Lag bolts
- Wood stain (optional)
- Polyurethane topcoat (optional)
Tools Needed:
- Drill
- Saw (circular or miter saw)
- Planer
- Pocket hole jig
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Screwdriver
- Clamps
Step 1: Preparing the Lumber
Start by planing down all the 2x4s and 2x6s to achieve a smooth surface finish. Once planed, cut the lumber to the appropriate lengths for the bed frame.
Step 2: Assembling the Mattress Boxes
Screw the two mattress boxes together. To avoid splitting the wood, pre-drill the screw holes before attaching the pieces. The standard dimensions for a twin-size bed frame are 39 by 75 inches.
Step 3: Creating the Bed Support Rails
Cut the bed support rails from the 2x4s, notching out the ends so that the mattress sits lower in the frame. This will help secure the mattress better.
Step 4: Building the Structural Posts
For the corner posts, use a combination of 2x6s and 2x4s. Cut off the rounded corners of the 2x4s, glue them together, and secure with pocket screws for added strength.
Step 5: Adding Glue Blocks
To ensure that the top bunk remains stable and does not fall through, add glue blocks under the corners of the bed frame. This will provide extra support.
Step 6: Preparing the Rail Slats
Make dado cuts down each piece of the bed frame to hold the rail slats and spacers. This will help lock everything in place securely.
Step 7: Assembling the Ladder
The ladder should be designed with redundancy to ensure that the rungs do not come loose. Each step should fit into a dado and be secured with glue dowels.
Step 8: Final Assembly and Finishing
Before finishing, do a dry assembly to ensure everything fits together properly. Once satisfied, apply a coat of spiced walnut stain followed by a gel polyurethane topcoat for protection.
Step 9: Installing the Bunk Bed
Final assembly should take place in the bedroom. This process will take about two and a half hours. Make sure to secure all slats and spacers as you go.
Step 10: Enjoying Your New Bunk Bed
The best part is seeing the kids enjoy their new bunk bed. Now they have a fun place to play and sleep!
With this guide, you can build a sturdy and stylish bunk bed that will last for years.
