Board and Batten Accent Wall

This board and batten accent wall project was created by Angela from Angela Marie Made, and it’s perfect for adding character to your space. You can customize the colors and styles to suit your taste, making it a fun and engaging project for DIY enthusiasts.

Materials Needed:

  • 1×4 MDF boards (pre-primed)
  • 1×2 MDF boards
  • Brad nailer
  • 1 1/4 inch Brad nails
  • Utility knife
  • Pry bar
  • Construction adhesive
  • Lightweight spackle
  • Paintable caulk
  • Paint (Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray)
  • Miter saw
  • Level
  • Stud finder

Step 1: Remove Existing Baseboards

Start by removing the existing baseboards from the wall. Score along the top and corners with a utility knife, then use a pry bar to carefully remove the baseboard.

Step 2: Install New Baseboards

Measure the length of your wall and cut your 1×4 board to size using a miter saw. If your wall is longer than the board, use multiple boards and fill the seams. Install the baseboard with a brad nailer, ensuring it’s level.

Step 3: Attach the Middle Board

Determine how high you want your board and batten wall. For example, if you want it 55 inches high, mark this height on the wall and install the middle 1×4 board at that height using brad nails.

Step 4: Determine Batten Spacing

Decide how many batten boards you want. For example, if you want 7 battens, calculate the total space needed and determine the spacing between each batten. Mark the wall according to your measurements.

Step 5: Install Battens

Cut each batten to size and use construction adhesive and brad nails to attach them to the wall based on your marked measurements.

Step 6: Add the Top Board

Cut your 1×2 board to size and install it on top of the middle board to create a ledge, using construction adhesive and brad nails.

Step 7: Fill Holes, Caulk, and Paint

Fill any nail holes with lightweight spackle and sand smooth once dry. Caulk all seams and corners to create a finished look, then paint your board and batten wall.
