This project is by Jesse from Penalty Box Woodshop, and it’s designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. With adjustable shelves and a recessed French cleat system, this display case will hang flush against your wall, making it a perfect addition to any space.
Materials Needed:
- 3/4 inch cherry wood
- 1/4 inch plywood for back panel
- Plexiglass for the cabinet door
- Brad nails
- Wood glue
- French cleat system
Tools Required:
- Miter saw
- Table saw
- Router table
- Trim router
- Shelf pin jig
- Clamps
- Drill
Step 1: Cut the Wood to Size
Start by cutting all four sides of the display case to rough length using your miter saw and to width on the table saw.
Step 2: Create 45-Degree Miter Cuts
Next, cut the ends of each side at a 45-degree angle. If you prefer, you can also use a miter saw for this step.
Step 3: Cut Grooves for the Back Panel
Using your table saw, cut grooves into all four sides to fit the 1/4 inch plywood back panel. Make passes until the groove is wide enough for the test piece.
Step 4: Drill Holes for Adjustable Shelves
Utilize a shelf pin jig to drill evenly spaced holes along the entire length of the two side pieces of the box.
Step 5: Assemble the Display Box
Assemble the box using painter’s tape to hold the miters in place while you clamp it together. If you prefer a more challenging method, feel free to skip this step.
Step 6: Create the Cabinet Door
Cut the rails and styles for the cabinet door, then head to the router table to cut grooves in both components.
Step 7: Install the Hinges
Cut mortises for the hinges using the trim router and install the hinges after pre-drilling the holes.
Step 8: Cut and Fit the Shelves
Cut the shelves to fit inside the cabinet and create grooves to hold the coins. You can modify the shelves based on your display needs.
Step 9: Install the French Cleat
Cut a French cleat from the cherry wood and attach it to the back of the cabinet using pocket holes and glue.
Step 10: Hang the Cabinet
Mount the other half of the French cleat to the wall, then hang the cabinet and install the shelf pins.
Challenge coins are a meaningful tradition within the military and first responder communities, often given as a sign of respect. With this display case, you can showcase your collection beautifully.
