Ana White has created a fantastic plan for a farmhouse coffee table that anyone can build. This guide will walk you through the steps to create a stunning coffee table for under $40, perfect for any living space.

Materials Needed:

  • 2 – 2×6 boards (for the top)
  • 2 – 2×2 boards (for the legs and X detailing)
  • 4 – 2×4 boards (for the frame)
  • Wood glue
  • 1/2 inch trim screws
  • Wood finish or stain

Tools Required:

  • Sliding compound miter saw (or circular saw)
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Sander
  • Tape measure
  • Clamps (optional)

Step 1: Cutting the Boards

The first step in building your coffee table is cutting all your boards to size. Ana recommends using a sliding compound miter saw, but a circular saw works just as well. Cut your 2×6 boards for the top and the 2×2 and 2×4 boards for the legs and frame.

Step 2: Assembling the Legs

Begin by assembling two of the ends of the coffee table. Use 1/2 inch trim screws and wood glue to secure the pieces. The small head on the screws allows for a clean finish, as they hide right into the wood.

Step 3: Creating the X Detailing

Next, it’s time to add the X detailing to the ends of the table. Use leftover 2×2 scrap pieces to trace, cut, and fit into position. This detail adds character and a rustic touch to the design.

Step 4: Attaching the Top

With the legs and detailing complete, lay out the top boards. If you have a pocket hole jig, join the tabletop boards first for a tighter fit. If not, you can simply screw the boards down from the top, ensuring they are tight and secure.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Once the top is secure, you can add any finishing touches. Ana recommends adding brackets to the edges for a polished look. After everything is assembled, sand down the table and apply your choice of wood finish or stain to enhance the wood grain.

Step 6: Final Assembly and Placement

After the finish has dried overnight, your coffee table is ready to be moved into place. Ana emphasizes how quickly this project comes together, often within just a few hours. The final product is not only beautiful but functional, featuring a shelf below for added storage.
